Saving a Section as a Template in Webct/VISTA

 Problem Description :

How to Save a Section as a Template

 Resolution :

Saving a Section as a Template

1) Login in as a Campus Administrator

2) At the Learning Context level, go to the category/division and enroll the instructor as a group designer.

3) Make sure that your administrator’s account is a group administrator of this category/division

4) Go to the Template Manager (at the same level as the Learning Context level)

5) Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the divisions (current templates are listed at the top above the divisions)

6) Open the Division containing the sections

7) Open the course to show the sections

8) Click on the identified section to show “Section Content” at the right of the screen

9) Click on the ‘copy’ icon at the right

10) In the Selected Destination box, select the division in the left window where the instructor is teaching in. This will be where the template will be saved at. If you omit this step, the template will be saved at the institution level

11) Change the name in the “Paste as” box from section content to the name the template will be saved as. The current naming convention is to the following: InstructorName – COUR-9999 – TermYY. For example: Spiers – ITEC-3245 – Sum06. NOTE: use the term that the template will be used for as the final portion of the name. If the current semester that the section is being taught in is used as the template name, it might be confusing. For instance, if a ‘live’ section being used for Spring is being made into a template for Summer 2006 then use Sum06 as the final portion of the name.

12) Leave the file as “unlinked”

13) Click “Paste”

14) Change the owner name to reflect the instructor’s name

15) Keep it as private. Once a template is saved as public it cannot be private again.

16) Add any other instructor teaching the course as an editor, Add yourself as an editor if desired.

17) Click on the Save button

18) Wait.

Associate the Template

19) Here is how to associate it with the course

20) Open the Learning Context, go to the course level (not the section level)

21) Click on the templates panel

22) Click on the associate template button

23) A list of all available templates will appear. Find the template you just created and click on the check box next to it

24) Click on the SAVE button on the bottom of this page

25) The template has been associated with the course. In order to get it assigned you may do the following. In most cases the instructors know how to do this:

Assigning the Template

26) Go to the Learning Context level

27) Drill down to the section level of the class, not the course level

28) Click on the templates panel

29) Click on Assign Template to Section button

30) Select the template to assign to the section

31) Click Save. The selected template is saved to the section.
