Commvault - Linux backups for VCenter with file level restores
Problem Description :
Linux VMs are backing up but can not do file level restores.
Resolution :
File level restores are supported in Commvault 9 for EXT2 and EXT3 file systems in linux. However to collect the Metadata a registry edit is required on the client computer on which the Virtual Server iDataAgent is installed (bessie).
Follow these steps below...
1. Login to Bessie (physical machine accessed through KVM swtich)
2. Open regedit and locate the key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CommVault Systems\Galaxy\Instance001\VirtualServer.
3. Create a DWORD value named LinuxMetadataSupport
4. Set the range to 1 - to enable metadata collection
5. Reboot bessie or restart all Commvault Services
You will not see the file level on Linux server backups until after a full backup (or an incremental backup which will just show the changed files).
NOTE: This registry key provides the facility to explicitly collect Metadata while running Linux virtual machine backups. Note that if this key is not added, Metadata collection will not be collected though Enable Granular Recovery option is checked.
YOU ONLY HAVE TO DO THIS ONCE
