View tapes loaded in CommVault Simpana tape library

Problem Description :

Steps to view the tapes used by the CommVault Simpana tape library.

 Resolution :

1 - Access the CommCell Console (see Best Solution #225)

2 - In left navigation pane, expand Storage Resources-->Libraries-->IBM 3573-TL-3-->Media By Groups. The primary groups utilized are:

--- Default Scratch - tapes in this group are available for use to the backup

--- Cleaning Media - these are cleaning catridges identified by the CL at beginning of their barcode

--- Assigned Media - these are tapes that have been previously used by a backup job.

Important headings in tape listing:

Tape Barcode - unique code barcoded on spline of tape used for identification

Status - the little square on bottom right of icon indicates tape status. Open square is empty, half square if partially used and solid blue square is a full tape

Storage Policy/Copy - indicates storage policy/subclient job used to write to tape

Location - the slot number within the tape library or 'Not Available' indicates tape is out of library and should be at bank

Last Write Time - last date/time tape was written to

Size of Stored Data - amount of data written to tape

Number of Uses - for cleaning cartridges the number of cleaning's cartridge has been used for

Rotating tape to/from bank safety deposit box:

1 - All tapes in the Assigned group that is physically in the tape library, i.e. Location indicates a slot #, should be taken to bank

2 - There should be at least 4 tapes in the Default Scratch group that are physically in the tape library, i.e. Location indicates a slot#. If there are not 3 tapes available, tapes in the Default Scratch with a Location of 'Not Available' will need to be brought back from the bank.

Tape rotation can also be determined by the Storage Information Report as noted in Best Solution #259
