Reading the CommVault Simpana tape media Storage Information Report

Problem Description :

Notes on reading the CommVault Simpana tape media Storage Information Report

 Resolution :

The report lists all media assigned to the Tape Library System. The media is grouped by "Storage Policy" and then "Group" withing the storage policy. At this time, we only have one Storage Policy, 'Default_Date'. The groups on the report will generally be "Assigned" meaning there is active, retained data on the tape of "Default Scratch" meaning the tape is available for use by a backup job.

The report also indicates the Location of the media. A location of 'Not Available' indicates the media is no in the tape library and should be either stored at the bank safety deposit box or in the CSD Server Room. If the Location is 'Slot xx' the media is in the tape library in the designated slot.

Determining media to return to bank safety deposit box: The media will be listed in the Default_Data storage policy with a Location of slot xx. The Last Write column should also indicate the tapes were recently written to.

Determining media for next backup job: Any media that is listed in the Default Scratch storage policy with a Location of slot xx is in the tape library and available for use in a backup job. If there are not four tapes located in the tape library listed in the Default Scratch policy, additional tapes will be needed from the bank safety deposit box. During the "run to the bank", bring back media with oldest Last Write dates listed as in Default Scratch and Location is Not Available.

In order to remove the tapes from the physical tap library follow the steps below...

1. Click the arrow button to see the menu

2. Hit the minus button to highlight the word 'Control' then press the arrow key

3. Do the same to navigate to the word 'Magazine'

4. Choose right to release the magazine with the tapes.

5. Pull out the right magazine

5. Push needed tapes determined above from the back of the magazine

6. Leave magazine slightly ajar until you put in the new tapes brought back from the bank
